The Council recognized Hubbard for her accomplishments with her school’s Beta Club. Currently, Hubbard is the Alabama State Junior Beta Club president and will attempt to become the National Junior Beta Club president this summer.

On behalf of the council, Mayor Petey Ellis presented Hubbard with a certificate.

“We like to show good things about our students,” Ellis said. “We are very proud of Leigh Hubbard.”

Hubbard spoke briefly to the council during Tuesday’s meeting.

“Winning the state competition was a big accomplishment,” she said. “Right now I’m making sure my speech is polished and just getting everything ready to go to nationals.”

Hubbard will compete in June for the national title.

Robert Nelson of Nelson Engineering was also present during the meeting to present the council with the lowest bid on phase 3 of the sewer project which is the main line that will run to the creek.

“The bid is within your budget,” Nelson said. “After the bid is accepted, it will then go to the USDA for approval and then they will issue a contract. In whole, it will be another 60 to 90 days before it’s started and hopefully by the end of the year we will be near completion.”

An Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs (ADECA) Grant is helping to fund the sewer project that will total more than $812,000 upon completion.

Before the closing of the meeting, Ellis thanked everyone who participated in the Relay for Life fundraisers last weekend.

“The Frog Festival Committee was really the group that headed everything up,” Ellis said. “They raised in excess of $4,000 and we’re definitely proud of that.”

An upcoming event for the city will be the state mine rescue competition, which will be held May 17-20 at the new football field near the Sumiton Community Center.

The competitions are held in a joint effort by the Alabama Coal Association and Bevill State Community College’s Sumiton campus.
